Things Sync between Macs

Being a big fan of GTD I’ve decided to bought Things for Mac and iPhone from the german software development company Cutured Code. With one of the last versions of Things for the iPhone they’ve implemented the looked-for feature to sync your tasks between the iPhone and Mac version.

This was a hugh request but leaving still one feature left, the sync between, for example, your home and work Mac doesn’t work out of the box. So I’ve searched for that topic and found a simple solution.

Here is how:

  1. Create a free account at Dropbox and install Dropbox on your Mac.
  2. Create a folder called “Things” in your Dropbox-Directory and copy the Things database from YourUserDirectory/Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/Database.xml to YourUserDirectory/Dropbox/Things/Database.xml.
  3. Start Things holding down the Option-key or Alt-key on your keyboard.
  4. Things now ask you for a complete new or existing Things database. Choose “Choose Library” and select the Database.xml file in your dropbox folder.
  5. Repeat step 1 to 4 on your second Mac.

Now, when you create your tasks in Things on the one Mac and next time open Things on the other Mac, Dropbox will automatically keep your tasks in sync.

Notice: Please be careful and create a backup of your Things database file before walking through these steps to avoid losing your tasks data.
